Rinsing water bottles with an ozone rinser is a standard practice in the bottling industry and at high-end water refill stations. Ozone is a powerful oxidizing agent that provides a higher level of sanitation than traditional chemical or heat treatments.
The primary benefits of using an ozone rinser include:
- Superior Sterilization – Ozone is one of the strongest commercially available disinfectants. It kills bacteria, viruses, molds, and spores—including chlorine-resistant pathogens like *Cryptosporidium* and *Giardia*—up to **3,000 times faster** than chlorine. It works by rupturing the cell walls of microorganisms, rendering them inactive almost instantly.
- No Chemical Residue – Unlike chlorine or peracetic acid, ozone is highly unstable and quickly reverts to pure oxygen. This eliminates the carbon footprint associated with transporting, storing, and disposing of plastic chemical jugs. Wastewater Safety: The runoff from an ozone rinser is simply oxygenated water, which is safe for the environment and does not require special neutralized treatment before entering the drain.
- Extended Shelf Life – By ensuring the bottle and cap are completely sterile before filling, ozone helps prevent the growth of “biofilm” or algae inside the bottle over time. This can significantly extend the shelf life of the bottled product without the need for preservatives.
